The event, organised by the Merimbula Water Dragons, involves a 15km paddle from Gipsy Point to Mallacoota with stops at Sandy Point and Karbeethong.
The dragons take four boats to Mallacoota allowing a total of 80 paddlers, four sweeps and four drummers to take part.
The event has become so popular that a waiting list develops for the 88 places with paddlers attending from as far afield as Forbes, Parkes, Bathhurst and Albury.
The journey to Mallacoota also includes some games where the paddlers are required to manoeuvre the boats to collect various iyems in the water or along the shore. This year there was an unexpected safety drill when one of the boats overturned. Fortunately no one was injured; all but one paddler returned to the boat to continue. Evening entertainment at the Mallacoota Golf Club was provided by Merimbula Water Dragons group, the Sunset Jammers.
