“Running the equivalent of a marathon every day, Dane shared his message of awareness, understanding and acceptance of autism from Perth to Pambula, meeting every challenge with his huge, contagious smile and raising over $120,000,” Aspect’s CEO, Adrian Ford, said.
The award was given to Dane at a gala evening in Sydney’s Radisson Blu Hotel on Thursday, April 5.
Over 100 people, including Senator Scott Farrow and John Doyle (from Roy and HG fame), attended the evening which saw six awards presented to people, families, carers, professionals and corporations whose efforts, skills or projects highlighted or addressed issues facing the autism community.
Dane’s mum Junee Waites attended the evening with Dane and said that John Doyle “did Dane proud with his introduction”.
There were seven nominations for the award received by Dane.
“It was a very special evening,” Dane said.
“I felt very, very proud when I heard my name read out,” he said.
Aspect said the evening provided the perfect showcase for the talents and extraordinary abilities of a community that is often isolated and misunderstood.
“The 2018 Recognition Awards aim to celebrate the incredible achievements happening within our autism community,” Aspect’s CEO, Adrian Ford, said.
April is autism awareness month.
