Local estuaries from the Kiah River, south of Eden, to Mogareeka in the Bega River are all fishing well with tailor, mullet, trevally, lovely blue lipped bream and lots of breeding snapper all on the chew.

There are some legal sized snapper to be caught in the middle of Merimbula Lake early morning and evening with pilchards a preferred bait.
Anglers competing in the $3000 Lakeview Hotel Dusky Flathead competition using bait found it hard going to target flathead at Merimbula due to intense competition from other species including voracious tailor and lots of big blue swimmer crabs. A large turtle also featured in the Merimbula Lake.
The winning dusky flathead was taken at the Broadwater Pambula by David Huntley. It was no giant at 680mm, particularly as we know there are metre-plus fish in the estuaries. Needless to say the Merimbula Lakeview Hotel’s prize for any fish over one metre has now jackpotted to $1000 for next year. Second prize for lure angling went to Harley Jenkins fishing the same area.
First prize for bait went to Peter Lawler also fishing at Pambula with a 660mm fish. Second prize in this category again went to Harley Jenkins. The Club’s social secretary Merrily Bell took out the Ladies Lure section. Of special note is Harley’s seven-year-old son Kade who took out both first and second prize for Juniors with the largest dusky of 545mm. Third prize for Juniors went to Joey Elton.
Harley Jenkins together with his partners, Lindon Thompson, Tim McConnachie and Kade took out the “best five fish” category. As a strictly catch and release event all dusky flathead were released alive.
Offshore the East Australia Current is still running strongly to the south and there continues to be great gamefish (marlin) tag and release action off Merimbula and Eden. Mahi mahi (dolphin fish) are also giving anglers lots of excitement at the FAD. Best bait for the mahi mahi at the FAD is slimy mackerel.
Snapper and morwong remain on the chew along our reefs from Mowarry, Boyds Tower, Lennards Island and from the Horseshoe Reef area past Haycock and at White Rock from Kianinny. There are good patches of baitfish; slimy mackerel and yellowtail fairly close inshore.
Flathead are also plentiful at Tura Headland, Bournda, White Rock and Cowdroys. Reports to date suggest the flathead can be a little small so anglers should watch that they are taking legal size fish.
Good calamari squid continue to be landed at both Tathra and Merimbula Wharfs with luderick becoming patchy at Merimbula, try using artificial plastic weed lures. The best times are morning and evening.
