The Beautification of Merimbula was the agenda for the February meeting for the Merimbula and District Garden Club. Guest speakers Brenda Edbrook and Anne Wright told of their valuable volunteering hours, ideas and inspiration, spent and given towards the beautification and improvement of facilities in Merimbula over the last 38 years.

Brenda was one of the members of Merimbula 2000 committee, and has just stepped down from the Merimbula Beautification committee after 20 years working alongside the many members. Anne, along with an energetic group of like minded locals, has been instrumental in the upgrading and beautification of Bar Beach, and the support of local businesses and council has been an added incentive to continue bringing tourists and residents the "Magic of Merimbula".
Annual Easter arts exhibition
“The Merimbula Arts Group meeting is to be held at the Merimbula RSL this Saturday March 10, commencing at 2pm. Members and guests are welcome to attend. The Group’s annual Easter arts exhibition opens on Good Friday, March 30 until Sunday, April 8. Opening hours are 9am to 4pm at Merimbula’s Twyford Hall. All works of arts and crafts of a very high standard are by local artists. Opening night on Thursday, March 29 commencing at 7pm. Sponsorship by the many local businesses and persons towards the exhibition is greatly appreciated.
Genealogy Society afternoon tea
Bega Valley Genealogy Society will host an afternoon tea on Thursday March 15 at 2pm at the Old Courthouse in Pambula. Meet the volunteers who assist in the running of its family history research centre and see the vast amount of research material available in the historic building. The Courtroom is an ideal venue for meetings and seminars for community groups. Contact Ursula Hunt Ph 02 6495 3566.
VIEW Club new committee
A new committee was elected at the Merimbula Day VIEW Club’s annual meeting. President Danielle Watkins will head the committee of vice president Helen Cook, delegate Jeannine Gruel, secretary Beryl McGrath-Smith, treasurer Jan Fox, assistant secretary Joan Callaway, assistant treasurer Iris Ballard and program officers Anne and Louise Pearson.
The club’s next lunch meeting will be held on Friday, March 9 at Merimbula RSL Club at 11.30am. In recognition of International Women’s Day, there will be a presentation on interesting and inspiring women of the Bega Valley. Bookings can be made with Iris Ballard on 04 4884 0752 by March 7. Member’s annual fees of $20 are now due. The Thursday brunch will be at 11am on March 15 at the Comfort Inn, Merimbula, cost $10. Contact Helen Cook on 04 3114 2770 to attend. Orchid Clinic at Tura
Learn about orchids and their care and get hands on experience at the Orchid Clinic to be held at Tura Beach Garden Centre on Saturday, March 10 at 2pm. Sapphire Coast U3A courses
During March, people over 50 on the Sapphire Coast can attend an exciting program of cheap, short courses and activities run by Sapphire Coast U3A.
On March 8, Don McDowell will draw on a lifetime of experience in strategic intelligence and risk analysis to present a workshop on Strategic Planning and Analysis. If you’re involved in a business, community or government organisation dealing with major changes, this workshop will teach you how to analyse the issues and develop a strategy to achieve your goals.
Or perhaps you’re into trout fishing? On March 15, share your anecdotes and hear Paul Strutynski share his knowledge of what to take, where to go and how to catch the big ones when trout fishing in New Zealand and Australia.
On March 17, Susan Mikus, an experienced local jewellery maker, will be teaching some simple techniques and you can design and make a necklace and earrings to take home.
If you’ve ever wondered what goes on at a Marine Rescue Base, find out on March 26 by visiting the Merimbula base. You’ll learn about the history, rescues, training and operations and, if conditions are good, a short ride on rescue vessel MB 30.
