The family friendly event will start at 6am on Saturday, March 3, and conclude at noon on Saturday, March 10.
A free sausage sizzle barbecue for all competitors will be held at 5.30pm on Friday, March 2, at the clubhouse on Quarantine Bay Rd, Eden, as part of an induction night.
On the night, the club will have guest speakers who will highlight safety on the water, including representatives from Fisheries, Water Police, Eden Rescue and Maritime Services. There will also be lots of great giveaways throughout the evening.
This event is organised by the Eden Amateur Fishing Club and major sponsors for 2018 are Sapphire Marine and Automotive and Honda Australia.
We also have some new sponsors on board and some exciting new prizes up for grabs.
- Eddy Evans, Eden Amateur Fishing Club
EAFC publicity officer Eddy Evans said with the assistance of many other valued local sponsors, the club will this year have amassed an amazing prize pool that will actually exceed the advertised value of $50,000.
“We also have some new sponsors on board and some exciting new prizes up for grabs,” he said.
The open section major lucky draw prize is a McLay Fortress 4.41 metre boat and trailer, along with a 40hp four-stroke Honda motor, for a total value of $37,500.
There will again be the open section with cash prizes of $400 for the heaviest of 24 species of fish, and the ladies can win $200 for the weightiest of 19 species. There will be 34 prizes of a $50 voucher or cash, plus a trophy to be won in the boys and girls sections.
The competition fishing areas are limited to the coast, rivers and estuaries from Moruya River in the north-east to the Bemm River in the south.
Tickets will be available all competition week and the club will have several barbecues in the main street of Eden where the boat, motor and trailer can be viewed, and tickets purchased.
Last year’s week-long family fishing competition attracted anglers from almost every state and territory across Australia.
Mr Evans said he could not believe the attendance across the week, particularly as fishers competed in “deplorable” conditions.
Entrants fell just shy of 900, but crept past the previous year’s record of 864.
Aaron Habgood reeled in the largest catch of the week with a 111kg marlin.
This year marks the Eden Amateur Fishing Club’s 40th consecutive annual fishing competition, so the committee is hoping for a record number of entries that will even surpass last year.
Open entry fees are just $40, ladies $20, boys and girls $5. Under sixes are free.
