Improve your long game is a campaign run by the Cancer Council which has supported 100 clubs across NSW.
Clip on sunscreens and sunscreen stands have been distributed around the green by golf pro Glenn Warne who is the main push behind the campaign.
“I have handed out 100 of the free sunscreens to the golfers so that they have no excuses,” Mr Warne said.
“If we can get 60 of the golfers to wear it out of the 165 that come for a competition – that has got to be helping.”
Cancer Council community programs coordinator Emma Swords said men over the age of 40 are 1.5 times more likely to be diagnosed with melanoma, and around twice as likely to die from it, compared to women of a similar age.
“The club has been decked out with sun safe collateral and the staff have been given sleeves to wear, to role model the behaviours,” she said.
“This time of year we are honing into it, but we hope it will continue through the colder months,” Ms Swords said.
The club hopes to see the eight week campaign continue into the future by changing male golfers attitudes towards being sun safe.
It is targeted at men because they are really slack at it.

“We really want to make them sun aware because a lot of our members have been in to get cancers cut out.”
