Officials said the courts form part of council’s property, which included the old library, with the site expected to be officially sold in the next few weeks.
Club president Matt Fanning said while it appeared the end was nigh for the current courts, there is optimism and enthusiasm for the promised new courts at the Sapphire Aquatic Centre.
“We’ve had some truly wonderful and memorable times at these now humble courts” Fanning said, adding that ”the continued roll-up of young and older and new and past players reinforces the ongoing popularity of this sport in the Bega Valley”.
More than 50 players will participate in the summer competition, which will feature the strongest A-1 line in years.
Fanning noted “the Club is really pleased to have back a very likeable and quality player from Bombala, Jason Vincent, who will captain one of the teams”. Also returning is the local pastor from Sapphire Life Church, Jeremy Fernando – “an empathetic and relaxed soul off the court - once on it, Jeremy is noted for his unyielding tenacity, something he achieves without compromising his strong respect for others”.
Fanning also noted the good roll-up of players from the Bega region.
“They have added another dimension to the Club, adding not only new squash styles and skills, but plenty of humour and friendly banter,” he said.
“They’ve really mixed in well and we’ve been delighted to have them and their partners join us over the past year or two”.
“We hope that if the site sale goes ahead that the new owners will hold on removing us and help us to wrap up the history of squash at this facility in grand style, with a big grand final the week before Easter.”
Once the courts have closed for good, Fanning put faith in council to build the new courts proposed for the Sapphire Aquatic Centre.
“We trust they will keep to their commitment of the new facility, which will support not only squash, but a range of other indoor leisure activities for a wide range of community members,” he said.
