There was a relaxed atmosphere to the track side as a good majority in attendance were on holiday, predominately from Melbourne.
Sapphire Coast Turf Club marketing and promotions manager Jess Ryan said there was a great feel to the day.
“We’re really pleased with the crowd that has turned up,” she said.
The focus of the day was family, with a free jumping castle, marine critter tank and other toys and activities to entertain the track’s younger guests.
The Sapphire Coast Turf Club’s inaugural teddy bear’s picnic also took place on the day, with around 40 children entering their toys into the teddy bear fashions on the field.
Special guest Peppa the Pig selected the biggest and cutest teddy bears of the day, and every entrant received a lolly bag.
“It’s a good family friendly option for people who are looking for things to do with their kids over the holidays,” Ms Ryan said.
Later in the day, the best dressed boy, best dressed girl and best dressed family were also awarded.
Winning horse of the Tathra Cup race, Janis, was trained to victory by Moruya trainer Chris Hansler.
Janis was ridden by apprentice rider Kristina Rayner, who came up for the races from Sydney.
Sapphire Coast Turf Club secretary manager Rob Tweedie said Rayner showed promise as a rider.
“She rode two winners here on Melbourne Cup Day and two on Boxing Day, so it’s great for her to get an early win for 2018 today too,” he said.
Mr Tweedie said the track was in good condition and evenly surfaced for competitors on Tuesday, and was delighted at the crowd numbers.
