Both firework events will be truly exceptional and bigger than ever before.
- Chris Nicholls, Merimbula Tourism
“This year’s event will provide the most spectacular NYE fireworks ever seen in the Bega Valley, and one of the biggest fireworks displays ever presented on the Far South Coast of NSW,” he said.
“We’re spending a hell of a lot more on fireworks in terms of the number of fireworks,” Mr Nicholls added.
“It’s going to be much more aerial, with more rockets and will be pretty spectacular. It has been designed so it can be seen from a lot of vantage points,” he said.
Council’s general manager Leanne Barnes said that council was working with the Merimbula Chamber of Commerce and Merimbula Tourism to ensure the event was “as successful as possible”.
“This could be the dawning of a new era where we take advantage of the natural water setting,” Ms Barnes said adding it was an opportunity for people to see the fireworks from the water.
Breaking with the tradition of a Ford Park display and concert event, this year the event will cater for the wider community, spread out and made visible to a far wider area of Merimbula as an essentially aerial display, not unlike the Sydney Harbour fireworks, Mr Nicholls explained.
“We’re providing maps and information which show the best vantage points all around Merimbula Lake, town and surrounds and these are available from the Merimbula Visitor Information Centre and online at www.merimbulatourism.com.au.
“As in previous years, there will be two fireworks events, one at 9.30pm and the other at midnight which will be bigger by a considerable amount than previously. Both will be truly exceptional and bigger than ever before,” Mr Nicholls said.
In addition, Sapphire FM community radio - 97.5 will be broadcasting a fireworks spectacular music program from 5.30pm until 12.10am.
“We’re encouraging people to take their partner, family, a picnic blanket, some yummy food, a radio (or streaming device) and head on down to Beach Street, the Boardwalk, Spencer Park, Rotary Park, Bar Beach or the Wharf, for a night to remember,” he added. Another vista the fireworks display can be viewed from is Pambula Beach.
