Technology and Applied Studies teacher Jason Smith and his language teacher wife Kristen, along with HSIE teacher Tom Keath are heading to new schools.
Meanwhile general assistant Dave Boulton and teachers Gary Berman, Keith Barrett and Greg Russell are retiring.
For science teacher Mr Barrett it’s the end of 23 years at Eden Marine – “I was going to stay two”. He said seeing Eden students achieving highly at HSC level made it all worthwhile.
“Three times we’ve had a first in the state student,” he said on Friday as the group gathered for their final goodbyes.
Mr Berman, who has been at EMHS for 16 years teaching English and history, looked back fondly on “a great bunch of kids” and how “everyone is so accepting”.
He plans on focusing more time on his beloved Light Horse Brigade and assisting with veterans through the Bega RSL sub-branch where he is currently president.
For general assistant Mr Boulton, after servicing the high school for 25 years, 17 of those full time, now it’s about working for his own benefit.
“There’s lots of work around the house waiting for me,” he said with a chuckle.
The Smiths are moving north, Jason to take up a position at the Illawarra Sports High School and Kristen at Figtree.
Jason said making a shift from computing into metalwork and construction classes was a new learning experience for him as well as his students.
“But knowing the kids who leave my classes have some skills to apply in the real world is a real thrill,” he said.
“This will be a new adventure and I’m really excited.”
For Mr Keath, it’s all about love. He is making a move to Sydney where his long-time girlfriend is already living, and will take up a role at Woolooware High School in the Sutherland Shire.
“I’ve learnt my trade from some of the best. It’s been a great experience here. The kids have been great and I’m also very appreciative of the community.”
