Ms Pulling’s lengthy tresses – usually wrapped into a bun and covered for her job at Merimbula Fresh Seafood – have been lopped off, but will be made into wigs for women undergoing cancer treatment.
The weekend’s cut comes after five weeks of fundraising, with all money collected going to the local Look Good Feel Better program, which runs make-up workshops and a wig library for cancer patients.
LGFB regional coordinator Helena Katerinka was on hand to watch Ms Pulling’s haircut at the hands of Studio 3’s Lyndall Walsh – herself a volunteer with LGFB.
Ms Katerinka said her wigs are all synthetic, but she would be sending Ms Pulling’s hair to Pantene in Sydney where they would turn it into a real hair wig.
“It’s the perfect hair for making wigs,” Ms Katerinka said. “It hasn’t been coloured or treated.”
It also helped that it was extraordinarily long.
“I haven’t had a haircut in around seven years,” Ms Pulling said.
“A lady came into the shop and said she had donated her hair. I thought that was a good enough idea to inspire me to get mine cut. It’s going to be nice for a change and good for summer.”
A total of $870.80 was raised toward LGFB through Ms Pulling’s sacrifice.
Ms Katerinka said her wig library can have around 100 loaned out at any one time.
“Not all of them come back, and it’s perhaps because the lady has passed on.
“Husbands sometimes come back to return them, which is a very emotional time for them and for me.”
