Alec Bowles’ team took on Dean Smith’s team, with nearly half his team comprising his own family to cap off a top year.
Early on, Kim Hammond showed no mercy and cleaned up Nicole Rowley 3-0. It was Marsha Smith and son, Bailey, who changed the balance, with strong wins, 3-1 and 3-0 respectively. “Marsha in particular shook off her sometimes relaxed demeanour and put on a tough suit of armour,” a spokesman said. Marsha controlled the tee and that, combined with her reach and gritty determination, saw her take the first, third and fourth games to claim the match.
Captain Alec Bowles tried hard to get Matt Fanning focused, but later noted he’d never seem him so tired and worn out.
Sparkie Josh Stanton and Bega-based Bayden Edwards took to the court and, after Bayden took the first 15-13, it was Josh who prevailed in the next three, taking the match 3-1.
Club president Fanning, looking hot and weary and licking his wounds, observed that “Bayden’s been a real club man, travelling down from Bega for his rostered matches, but also subbing on many occasions. He’s even come down at short notice after a big pasta meal - he’s been great to have amongst us”.
Young gun Angus “Gus” Warnock played a terrific and tight match against another Bega based player, the intriguingly named and very affable Sheep Thatcher. After games went to one then the other, the 5th game saw Gus prevail 15-13 in a real crown pleaser.
The energetic Calvin Vong prevailed in a tough 3-1 win over the ever-determined Rob Morton, and though Captain Dean went down to the redoubtable Alec Bowles in three tight games, he and his team enjoyed a well-earned 18-11 GF win. Well done, special T-shirts all round!
The Club will host plenty of squash action over summer, with relaxed social sessions on Wednesday nights from 6pm and Sunday’s from 4pm. New and past players are very welcome for the socials, or the Summer Comp, commencing smack-bang mid-summer, 15th January, 2018.
Please contact Matt Fanning 0429 95220) or Alex Wakeford (0401544671) and they’ll make you welcome.
