There’s no better place in NSW to have a close encounter with the whales or combine adventure in an unspoilt coastal wilderness.
Eden is part of the Sapphire Coast, an area of rugged beauty that’s so unique parts of it have been declared a world biosphere by UNESCO.
It’s also home to the Killer Whale Trail, Eden Killer Whale Museum and the best whale watching experiences in Australia.
The whales can be seen in large numbers in the town’s stunning Twofold Bay ... and while they frolic, feed and rest, experience the premier whale celebration for one weekend each year.
There’s also a spectacular street parade, vibrant markets, great local food, educational marine displays and presentations, children’s entertainment, live music and – of course – the chance to see the whales as they pass by.
You can take the Killer Whale Trail around Twofold Bay and visit the Eden Killer Whale Museum that is rich with tales of adventure.
When whales are sighted from shore, a siren sounds.
Look for gatherings at lookouts and beaches as people stop to enjoy the show.
Explore parts of the Eden township and Ben Boyd National Park, a half-day self drive tour, that’s best taken with a headland picnic or lunch out.
Bushwalking is popular. There are all kinds of walks, from the short stroll along the Eden Lookout’s Rotary Walk to the epic 31km track. Or take on a shore-based jaunt with water, sturdy shoes and a weatherproof jacket.
“Australian Geographic recently named Eden as the number one whale watching destination in NSW,” Cat Balou Cruises said. “The southern migration of Humpbacks is well underway with an estimated 20,000 expected to make their way south to the Antarctic this year.
“Many mothers and calves call into Twofold Bay at Eden to give their young a rest.”
Cat Balou Cruises are an experienced whale watching operator in NSW and operate their popular cruises daily until late November with plenty of whales to see.
