Twenty-two Lumen Christi Catholic College students recently travelled to Newcastle to participate in the NSW Science and Engineering Challenge.

The Lumen students were invited along to the challenge after winning the regional competition at the Sapphire Coast Turf Club in March. They were accompanied by four kids from St Patrick's in Cooma
The Science and Engineering Challenge is a nationwide STEM outreach program presented by the University of Newcastle in partnership Rotary clubs and universities.
Through the Challenge, students experience aspects of Science and Engineering which they would not usually see in their school environment.
The Lumen students participated in activities which encompass inquiry based learning, problem solving, discovery learning and group work; all with a science and engineering focus, such as bridge building, catapult construction, communications problems, electricity, hand mechanics, turbine and transportation problems.
The Challenge focuses on inspiring students in year 10 to consider a future career in science and engineering by choosing to study the enabling sciences and mathematics in years 11 and 12.
The Lumen team did extremely well, coming fourth in their heat of nine on the day. The students are very proud of their effort and greatly enjoyed the day.
