Within our Rotary District 9710 there are 47 clubs - that covers regions of Canberra, Southern Highlands, South and Far South Coast and inland from Batlow to Tumut.
Each year Service Awards are bestowed on Rotary members in this District, who have made exceptional humanitarian contributions.
This year, Libby Weir received the District 9710 International Service Award. The International Service Award is awarded for the most outstanding International Service project completed by a Rotary Club in District 9710 during the Rotary year.
Each year over the past 13 years, Libby has raised money and spent three months each year in a South African village setting up educational, vocational and agricultural programmes; giving hope where otherwise there would be none.
Ms Weir volunteers her services in a very deprived, semi-rural community with a high unemployment rate.
The community has been devastated by AIDS, resulting in many orphans, and child-headed families.
The District Governor, Steve Hill, attended the Rotary Club of Pambula to personally present this award to Libby and to add to the surprise, her family also attended the meeting to share with her this special occasion.
