Diggers and Panthers unite for charity

The Merimbula Diggers AFL club have raised $4330 for Motor Neuron Disease after their charity round on Saturday.

Contributions were made through gold coin donations, raffle tickets and nominations for club members to take the “Big Freeze Challenge”.

A slide leading to a pool of icy water was set up on the grounds, the club’s bold interpretation of social media’s viral “Ice Bucket Challenge”.

Diggers captain Daniel Wordon took to the slide, and confirmed it was a cold shock to the system.

The charity round was held in memory of his father, David Wordon, who passed away from MND only three months ago.

“He always came down to watch me play and take me to training as a junior,” Mr Wordon said.

Diggers president Rodney Geaghan said it was an emotional but worthwhile day.

Mr Geaghan thanked everyone who contributed on the day, including one donation of $600.

He also congratulated his Pambula counterpart for going down the slide, and thanked Eden Ice for donating the ice for the challenge.
