The Lumen Christi graduate took Australia by storm back in 2014 when his single Window to the Sky from the album Silence/Win made it to number 42 on Triple J’s Hottest 100.
Written in Canada during an emotional ‘up’ for Kim, his new single Breakneck Speed is a fitting taste of a newly refreshed, energised Churchill.
“Breakneck Speed was born in Quebec City,” Churchill explained.
“It was autumn and we were racing around the province through these tunnels of colour that all the maple trees had become.
“Most days were under this electric blue sky as well.
“I was kinda on the way up emotionally. I'd been tired for a while. Like a few months... It felt like we had played a bajillion festivals and toured forever.
“Everything was flying by in a blur that was disorientating. But by the time we had arrived in the Quebec fall, I was out in front again and really felt in awe of the whole world and how fast we were racing through it.
“Kinda like a top of the world feeling. That song became my celebration of it all.”
At just 26, Kim Churchill has already made some incredible achievements in his time as a professional musician.
Recognised as much internationally as in Australia, he has performed headline shows and festivals across the world including Falls Festival, Splendour in the Grass, Montreal Jazz, Telluride Blues and Glastonbury, as well as supporting acts including Billy Bragg and Leo Kottke.
It’s a long way from the beginning of his career, when he traversed Australia in a campervan, undertaking a musical journey to share and connect with the Australian musical landscape.
In 2014 Churchill released his fourth studio recording Silence/Win, a pre-eminent collection demonstrating a maturity and depth of song writing unparalleled by his previous works.
The single Window to The Sky became an anthem for summer adventures and an instant festival favourite during Churchill’s continued touring both in Australia and abroad.
Window To The Sky was also remixed by French producer The Avener (best known for his ARIA top ten single Fade Out Lines), and has over one million views online.
Drawing inspiration from his time in Europe and sojourns to Sri Lanka and Canada, Kim is currently putting the final touches on his next record – due for release in 2017.
Kim Churchill is touring parts of Australia in the coming months.
