Poor conditions were experienced over last weekend by anglers in the Eden Sport and Gamefishing Club’s highly popular Open Gamefishing Tournament and unfortunately there were only a few marlin and some sharks hooked.
Meanwhile, the earlier week-long Eden fishing competition was highly successful with about 800 entries across the week and fishing went ahead in excellent conditions.
Looking forward conditions are on the improve, a change in weather and the arrival of cooler currents from the south is singalling the arrival of yellowfin tuna to local waters.
Officials said the outlook for the Merimbula Big Game and Lakes Angling Club’s open yellowfin tournament scheduled for May 6-8 looks to be on track for a very successful weekend.
The club is posting a $6000 cash first prize for the heaviest yellowfin tuna “line class” caught over the duration of the tournament.
There will also be numerous other category prizes up for grabs.

On the offshore reefs there are plenty of morwong and snapper between Long Point, Horseshoe Reef near Haycock, Quondolo and all around past Lennards to South Head.
Sand and tiger flathead remain on the chew especially off Tura Head, best depth is closer inshore, try 16 fathoms.
Catches are reported off the Pinnacles, inshore from the Horseshoe Reef, Short Point, the Tura Golf Course, Tura Headland and Bournda.
During poor offshore conditions focus on the estuaries where even sizable snapper are to be found. Our local estuaries are fishing well with reports of excellent dusky flathead, trevally, bream and whiting from all of Pambula, Merimbula and the Bega River.
Soft plastic lures and even baitfish metal lures are bringing good results.
At the Merimbula Fishing Platform and the Tathra Wharf, locals and visitors have been onto some good squid (calamari) using light jigs.
Some good sized salmon, bonito and frigate mackerel are about to be caught on metal lures as well as live baits. Luderick remain patchy during the changeable weather.
The club maintains an open house at Spencer Park every Friday evening starting at 6.30pm for happy hour.
