The Down South Jazz Club will start its new year program on Thursday, January 14 at 7.30 pm, at Club Sapphire with Geoff Power and Alan Solomon returning to Merimbula for what will be their sixteenth year of playing for the jazz club in January.
They will be backed as usual by local talented trio, Margie and Tony Fullerton and Ken Vatcher.
The band comprises Geoff Power on cornet, trombone and tuba, Alan Solomon on saxophone, clarinet and flutes, Margie Fullerton on piano, Tony Fullerton on bass and Ken Vatcher on drums.
Geoff has played regularly with Australia’s greatest jazz musicians such as Bob Barnard, James Morrison, Don Burrows, the San Francisco Jazz Band, the Café Society Orchestra, the New Wolverine Jazz Orchestra, and has appeared at most jazz festivals and jazz clubs throughout Australia.
Alan is one of Australia’s best reed players and has performed with top bands and orchestras including Tommy Tycho Orchestra, Daly Wilson Big Band, Channel 9 Orchestra and the the Mellotones. He is also a member of the Bob Barnard Band, the Geoff Power Classic Jazz and has his own bands ‘Swing Session’, “Alan Solomon Quartet” and “Alan Solomon All Stars”.
Once again these fine Sydney musicians are backed by the Fullerton Trio, Margie, Tony and Ken, who always complement Geoff and Alan so well with their exceptional high standards and professionalism.
It’s a great way to start 2016, which promises to be another year of excellent jazz. The Club Sapphire bistro opens at 6pm and music will commence at 7.30 pm. Meals can either be eaten in the bistro, or ordered, collected and eaten at leisure while listening to the music. Cost is $15 for jazz club members and $20 for visitors. Table bookings can be made with Aileen/Kevin Walsh (64959853) or will be available at the door.
