The platform was originally proposed when the new Surf Lifesaving Clubhouse was built in 2008 and former club president Don Hay said he’s glad to see it come to fruition.
“For many years Pambula Beach has been the only beach in the area without a way for people to view the water without walking on the sand,” Mr Hay said.
“Once the platform and it’s ramp are complete the beach will also be accessible for people of all abilities.
“This will be a very good thing for people with accessibility issues, they’ll soon be able to enjoy the beach like anyone else.”
The platform is a joint project, with the Bega Valley Shire Council funding the purchase of timber and materials, and members of the Pambula Surf Life Saving Club and Pambula Rotary providing their time and skills to build the engineered platform.
Around 15 volunteers have been working on the platform for a few weeks working for a rough total of 200 man hours.
The platform will be ready and in use by Christmas and once the tourist season ends Pambula Surf Life Saving Club and Pambula Rotary will get back to work to complete the access ramp.
“I want to thank surf club life members Andrew Holt and Stephen Hodgson who are builders and have provided construction advice to make sure we have built the platform to the right specifications,” Mr Hay said.
“I also want to thank the public for being so patient while we closed off the beach access while it was being built.”
The platform will also be of benefit to the surf lifesavers as it provides excellent views of the beach and main swimming area.
