Bega Valley triathlete Andrew MacNamara  will represent Australia next month, and is making waves on the triathlon scene.

MacNamara was just named the Elite Energy NSW Triathlon TRI-SERIES champion and has been selected for the Australian team.

The team will travel to Edmonton Canada next month to take part in the ITU World Triathlon Championships.

The Tri-Series champion crown is a repeat performance for MacNamara after winning the award in 2013.

MacNamara began competing in triathlons in 2012 with an extensive swimming history.

“I have come from a swimming background and represented local clubs Bega, Eden and Pambula all the way to national championships,” MacNamara said.

MacNamara said he had  “no previous biking or running experience”, but triathlons came naturally to him after tasting his first success.

However, his swimming prowess puts him in good stead during the competitions.

“I’ve been the fastest swimmer out of the water in all the triathlons I’ve done in the last three years.”

Since his presentation recently, MacNamara has been stepping up his training regime in preparation for the championships in Canada.

“Things are progressing well,” he said.

Competing as a non-professional, he said there were extensive costs involved with travelling to compete and contacted the Merimbula News Weekly earlier this year for sponsorship (MNW, 30/4).

One month out from competition, local support has been rolling in for MacNamara, who has nearly covered the cost.

“Thank you to the many people and businesses of the Bega Valley for the wonderful support and sponsorship,” MacNamara said.
