Emergency services were called to Ocean View Avenue, after the baby boy was hit by a Mitsubishi Pajero reversing from a neighbouring driveway.

The baby was taken to Bega Hospital and transferred to The Canberra Hospital emergency department by the Snowy Hydro SouthCare helicopter before being airlifted to Sydney Children’s Hospital, Randwick.

But despite his accident and the terrible injuries to his tiny body, the baby boy is responding well to seeing those who love him.

On Monday, the baby’s mother told the News Weekly: “He is very alert and squeezes our hand and opens his eyes. He loves when his sisters come in to see him.”

There is clearly a long road ahead for the baby; his mother said: “He has just had the lung tube taken out which reduces a lot of his pain. The fracture in his pelvis and thigh should heal in the next week. Also a hole in his bile duct should self heal in a couple of weeks.”

However his mother did add a note of concern saying: “As long as his little body can handle all the medicines.”

The accident produced an outpouring compassion for all those involved as the community took to Facebook to show its concern.

The baby’s mother has praised emergency services crews who “treated it like it was personal, not like it was just a job.”

Officers from Far South Coast Local Area Command are investigating the accident.
