Held at the Sapphire Coast Turf Club, the day was jointly sponsored by the BDN, Merimbula News Weekly, Eden Magnet and Bombala Times, with other races on the seven-race card supported by Domain, South Coast Golf Tours and Stonyvale Holsteins.
It was a top day in beautiful sunshine with a solid turnout of punters and guests, even though many were looking more towards Tuesday’s biennial Melbourne Cup meet at Kalaru.
Results for the day were as follows:
Race 1 – South Coast Golf Tours Maiden over 1600m
Queen Elektra ridden by Kayla Nisbet from the stables of Theresa Bateup ran first ahead of Bill’s My Boy and Henry’s Pride. Bill’s My Boy is trained locally by Joseph Jones Racing.
Race 2 – Bega District News Open Handicap over 1600m
Dure, ridden by Chelsea MacFarlane took the win from Grasp and Illyrian.
Race 3 – Domain Maiden Plate over 1000m
Rozburg, with Brodie Loy in the saddle, ran home over Harriet’s Jewel and Bilby.
Race 4 – Bombala Times Benchmark 61 Handicap over 1000m
Carly Frater-Hill rode Orange Time home strongly in the straight to claim victory over Secret Image and Jorgeus.
Race 5 – Merimbula News Weekly Benchmark 60 over 1400m
Clesea MacFarlane rode her second winner for the day on Cop A Nip, just pipping Flash Magic on the line, with Cherokee Warrior in third.
Race 6 – Eden Magnet Class 1 Handicap over 1200m
It was a gold medal run again for Carly Frater-Hill as Goldmine ran home over Inch Perfect and Monterey Magic.
Race 7 – Stonyvale Holsteins Maiden over 1200m
Whispered Prayer rounded out the day with a win for jockey Michael Travers and trainer Matthew Stephens, followed by Magic Mary and The Revenant.
Next up at the turf club is the Melbourne Cup Race Day, with full TAB coverage, Fashions on the Field and other family entertainment trackside. Gates will open at 11am and free shuttle buses are available.
