Carey, 22, is heading to Melbourne to take part in the Australian Fitness Show, a three-day expo gathering together the nation’s best bodybuilding and strength enthusiasts, and displaying the latest trends and products for fitness industry professionals.
At the expo Carey will be centre stage contesting the bodybuilding event for the title of Junior Mr Australia.
Carey won the ACT title three weeks ago to qualify for the national competition and said he was keen to prove he is among the country’s best natural bodybuilders.
The personal trainer at United Fitness Studios in Bega also said his colleagues and clients are following his progress with great interest.
“Everyone in the gym has been following how I go and they are all really supportive and excited to see what I’m up to,” Carey said this week.
He added that a support team from the gym would be joining him for the trip to Melbourne this weekend where he will compete as a representative of United Fitness as well as sponsor Next Generation Supplements.
In a Facebook post, United Fitness wished Carey well for the national title.
“You've trained so hard for this! We're so proud of you and the hard work you've put in to what you have already achieved! In our eyes, you're a winner regardless of the result.”
Carey said he has been preparing for this contest for 15 weeks, through specific and impressive training and diet regimes.
“I’ll eat eight to nine meals a day, a variety of foods, all measured to a target of calories,” he said. “It’s a lot of high protein foods.
“And I’ve been training once or twice a day, every day.”
Carey works his preparation in with his day job as a personal trainer at the Bega gym and has no plans to ease up.
“For sure [I’ll continue bodybuilding] – I really enjoy it.”
United Fitness Studio colleague Shaun Ruzicka said everyone at the gym was pretty excited for Carey.
“It’s quite an achievement for him personally as he has faced more obstacles than most to get where he is,” Ruzicka said.
“He’s putting a lot of pressure on himself and being very strict, but it’s good for him, he just needs to be aware of his stressload and fatigue [ahead of the competition].”
Ruzicka said United Fitness was like “a big family” and he has known Carey for around seven years.
“He’s always had natural size – I wish I had his genetics, it would make things a lot easier,” he said with a laugh.
The Australian Fitness Show Melbourne takes place from October 13-15 at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre.
