Barney McAll’s national award-winning ensemble ASIO will launch its much anticipated new album Hearing the Blood at the Windsong Pavilion, Barragga Bay, on October 15 at 2pm.
The Australian Symbiotic Improvisers Orbit (ASIO) is a quintet that includes five of Australia’s most innovative and esteemed jazz musicians.
The ensemble is led by virtuoso jazz pianist Barney McAll.
In this special concert McAll will be exploring the thrilling rich tones of Four Winds’ new Shigeru Kawai grand piano in the inspirational setting of the Windsong Pavilion.
McAll is a Grammy-nominated, multi award-winning pianist, composer and ensemble leader.
After establishing a stellar reputation in Australia he spent many years playing with America’s finest jazz musicians in the great global music metropolis of New York City.
McAll played regularly at a church fully absorbing the rich African gospel traditions as well as exploring many other of the city’s ethnic musical influences.
On returning to Australia in 2015 McAll recorded the wonderful 2015 album, Mooroolbark – named for the Melbourne suburb in which he grew up – with ASIO, which went on to win a swag of Bell, ARIA, AIR and iTunes jazz awards.
The other elite members of ASIO are also all award-winning jazz musicians, composers and band leaders.
Guitarist prodigy Carl Morgan is a Far South Coast “local”, having spent his formative years in Tilba before graduating from the Australian National University’s School of Music and then winning the highly prestigious national jazz guitar awards at Wangaratta Festival in 2014.
Mike Rivett is also a national award-winning saxophonist who is known for his rich tone and innovative and thrilling improvisations.
Hamish Stuart on drums and percussion is renowned for his dynamic rhythmic grooves and is already well known and loved in our region for his electrifying playing in a duo with local singer-songwriter Lucie Thorne.
Jonathan Zwartz on upright bass has it all – lush rich woody bass tones, breathtaking meaningful melodic solos and a wealth of killer grooves drawn from the full spectrum of blues, bebop, funk, Afro and Latin jazz .
