As a prelude to the Australian masters Games to be held in Tasmania in October, 10 paddlers from Merimbula Water Dragons took part in a regatta at Nowra on Sunday, September 17.
Nowra is one of the early season dragon boat regattas providing an opportunity to improve race fitness.
Merimbula Water Dragons teamed up with paddlers from Narooma and Moruya to take part in the regatta putting in two teams one of which consisted of the paddlers who will be attending the Australian Masters Games.
The Masters team was pleased to get into the finals and get some much-needed practise with the other members of the team.
Regular training sessions have now recommenced at Top Lake on Wednesday evenings (5pm for 5.30pm on the water) for paddlers looking to improve their race fitness and technique.
Under the guidance and enthusiastic coaching of Australian representative paddler Chris Cheung, the sessions work on endurance, strength, teamwork and technique, taking time to look at race plans as well.
New paddlers are always welcome and for anyone who wants a gentler introduction to paddling there are also sessions every Saturday 8.30am for 9am on the water. Anyone age 12 and over is welcome to attend. The first three paddles are free, so why not give it a try? It’s a great way to see Merimbula from the water.
Contact Pat Helmore on 0427 961 626 for more information about any of the sessions.
