From Little Things Parklands BioBlitz

This Saturday, Atlas of Life and From Little Things Parklands will be joining forces to coordinate a family focused BioBlitz of the Merimbula Creek area.

Teams will set off from Basecamp at the Merimbula Scout Hall, to survey the flora and wildlife of the area.

There will be guided surveys ranging from flora walks to reptile hunts and many other specialist activities.

From Little Things leader David Barrie said this was a way for the community to learn more about the environment and the project.

“With the Parklands site so central and important to the community we want to be very careful about what we are doing there and what our plans are in terms of preserving the habitat and environment,” Mr Barrie said.  “That’s why we’re doing the Bioblitz but it is also about getting the community involved and having lots of fun.”

Mr Barrie said they will have an area set up where people can learn about the project and “get a bit of a feel for where we are heading and what we are working towards”.

Bioblitzes are festivals of science in nature, and attract scientists, naturalists and community members to work together to explore the biodiversity of an area and identify as many species of plants and animals as possible.

All are welcome to attend, Mr Barrie expects it will run from in the morning through until around 5pm with plenty on offer.

Participants are encouraged to bring their cameras and smart phones.

“And if you have a kayak bring it to survey nature from the Creek and Lagoon - it’s beautiful there,” Mr Barrie said.
