Hippy Days, Arabian Nights is compelling story of a woman’s extraordinary life.
Katherine Boland came to Australia as a child with her family. Her father couldn’t adjust, he took the family back to the UK, then Spain, but returned to Gippsland where alcoholism and depression led to him commit suicide.
Years later, Katherine and her boyfriend dropped out RMIT and joined a hippy community on the Far South Coast of NSW to live the dream of mudbricks and mung beans.
When a bushfire ended her 27-year marriage, she returned to Melbourne where she launched her art career. On the back of a sell-out exhibition called ‘On Fire’, Katherine embarked on a new life of overseas scholarships and residencies, culminating with an invitation to Egypt from the Egyptian Ministry of Culture. It’s there where she fell madly in love with a translator, 27 years her junior.
A six-year long-distance relationship became a tale of a wild and wonderful romance. Age difference, cultural differences - especially around gender expectations - visa issues, and the descent of Egypt into political instability, prevented her from visiting Egypt and him from leaving.
Hippy Days is an honest insight into hippy life, that also reveals the darker side: drug abuse, child neglect and domestic violence. Arabian Nights is a reflection of her relationship, their love, and their opposed ways of seeing the world.
Hippy Days, Arabian Nights is an enthralling and moving memoir that will inspire the reader.
Ms Boland will be at Booktique, Merimbula from 4pm on Saturday, September 16 for what promises to be an impressive and inspiring author event.
