“I moved here about nine years ago to escape Canberra and its weather and I fell in love with the place,” Mr Nicholls said.
In that nine years he has been very involved with the community through roles with the Merimbula Rural Fire Service, Writers of the Far South Coast, various choirs, the Sapphire Coast Music Society, the Mumbulla Foundation and through contracts with Bega Valley Shire Council.
He is an IT specialist with marketing experience who says he has been in customer service all his working life. He also worked in the ACT tourism centre for eight years.
“I am really excited about this place. The centre has a diverse set of functions and I am struck by the devotion of the volunteers,” he said.
There are currently 25 volunteers at the MVIC with more joining some but Mr Nicholls said there was always room for more especially during the busy summer periods.
“Tourism has a big impact on business, retail, accommodation providers and also the people of the town and it is important that tourism is looked after,” he said.
Mr Nicholls said he will be engaging with relevant organisations and groups and will be attending the Merimbula Chamber of Commerce meeting on summer parking on Monday, September 4 at the Bega Valley Regional Learning Centre. He also said it was important to engage with all the tourism centres in the shire.
