University of Wollongong Liberal Club slam marriage equality postal poll

The Federal Government’s postal plebiscite on marriage equality has been slammed within the party’s own ranks.

But University of Wollongong Liberal Club president Cameron McLeod was quick to point out the group supported marriage equality and encouraged young people to check their enrolment and vote yes when the time comes.

The UOW Liberal Club was the first of its kind nationally to openly support marriage equality n 2015 when it voted unanimously to support amending the Marriage Act to allow for same sex marriage and to oppose the use of a plebiscite to decide the issue.

‘’In 2015, we stated that the push for a plebiscite, which has now transformed into a voluntary postal survey, was just a delaying tactic by opponents of equality. Unfortunately, this was proven correct and the fundamentalists continue to hold back this important reform,’’ Mr McLeod said.

‘’I find it astonishing that so-called conservatives are so willing to trash the institution of Parliament and representative democracy to stop people in loving relationships from getting married.

‘’Our club has a proud history of supporting equality before the law.

‘’Whether you support marriage equality as our club does, or oppose it, it is clear that this should be a matter for Parliament to decide.’’

It is both unconscionable and financially absurd to insist on a $122 million voluntary postal survey.

With the High Court still deliberating on the merits of the postal survey, the UOW Liberal Club is urging the Government to ‘’scrap it, do their job and vote on marriage equality’’.

‘’We will continue to push for the Government to take decisive leadership on this issue. It is both unconscionable and financially absurd to insist on a $122 million voluntary postal survey,’’ Mr McLeod said.
