With $1000 up for grabs you can’t blame Ruby Bichard and Sasha Chadwick for being over-the-moon at being named as finalists in this year’s YOOFTube competition

YOOFtube is a short film competition youth aged 12 to 20 in the Eurobodalla, Snowy Monaro and Bega Valley Shires and Ruby and Sasha are the only two finalists from the Merimbula/Pambula area.

While Ruby, who is only 13-years-old is not new to YOOFTube, Sasha, 16, is a first time entrant.

“When I got the email last night I couldn’t believe it. I didn’t expect to actually be a finalist the first time I entered the competition.”

Sasha’s film, Untitled Art, is an interpretive piece she put together with Fling dancers. She said it took her one day to get the footage and around two weeks to edit.

Sasha, who has been studying film at school for a couple years, said she used the competition as a way to experiement with fil, and art.

While Sasha’s film took a lot of planning and organsing as well as week’s of hard work, Ruby took a slightly different approach.

“I made an animation on my iPad about the ordinary life of a teapot,” Ruby said. “I started it the Thursday before it was due and it was due on the Tuesday so I only worked on it for a couple of days.”

Ruby won a $250 prize for best sound production in last year’s competition but said she wasn’t expecting to be named as a finalist this year.

Competition coordinator, Kate Howarth from South East Arts said all the films this year were of a very high standard.

"It was terrific to see a foreign language film entered this year, as well as a number of animated works. The talent of these young filmmakers is amazing,” she said.

The girls’ two films along with the other finalists films will be screened at a The Picture Show Man on Monday, September 4.
