Sunday’s meeting, July 30, at the Sapphire Coast Turf Club at Kalaru is the last for the current season, with trainers and jockeys tussling for the final premiership points on offer ahead of the horses’ birthday on August 1.
Turf Club secretary Rob Tweedie said Canberra’s Brodie Loy is currently leading the jockey premiership, but won’t be at this weekend’s meet as he is riding in New Caledonia this month in his first overseas job.
Simon Miller is only two wins behind in the premiership standings and a possibility to ride on Sunday, but final fields are not confirmed until Thursday.
It’s a closer-run thing in the trainers premiership, with Luke Pepper on six wins closely followed by the local training team of Barbara Joseph and Paul Jones on five, and Richard Clark also on five.
Tweedie said depending on the number of runners confirmed for the day once fields are set, this one is sure to go to the wire.
There are five separate horses all sitting on two wins apiece at the Sapphire Coast track for this season, but again it will depend on final fields as to who is sitting pretty for the 2016/17 premiership.
Meanwhile, the day also sees the running of the Eden Fisherman’s Club Eden Cup as well as a Christmas in July fundraiser lunch.
Money from the lunch is to be donated to Eden’s Christmas on Imlay celebrations, while a canned food drive culminates on Sunday with a donation to OzHarvest to benefit the region’s disadvantaged (see story, page 5).
There are seven races scheduled for the day with full TAB coverage.
Tweedie said nominations have been very strong and the final fields announced on Thursday should see a wonderful day’s racing on the Sapphire Coast.
Free buses will be running to and from the track from Eden and Bega, stopping at Pambula, Merimbula, Tura and Tathra along the way. Visit sapphirecoastturfclub.com.au for timetable details.
Gates open at 12 with the first race scheduled for 12.30pm.
This will be the final race meet at the Sapphire Coast Turf Club for the current season, with the Spring Race Day on November 2 to get things underway again.
It's a three-horse race for the trainers premiership.
