The whales hanging close to the shoreline caught the attention of surfers and passersby at Bar Beach where they moved to within meters of the surfers.
Theories and rumours started along the beach and back into town. Some thought a whale may have come in to give birth, others thought they may be injured.
But they could have just been relaxing as Southern Right Whales are famous for lounging about just behind the waves and can stay at one beach for days.
Photographer Debbie Osiecki said because of this people believed the whales were the same ones spotted in Tathra on Friday, July 21.
The Quaama resident also said she could not believe her luck when she spotted the whales.
“It was the first time I’ve ever seen whales,” Ms Osiecki said.
“I was walking at Bar Beach and I though it was a shark because I have been going whale watching every weekend for weeks and I’ve never seen anything.
“It was there for hours.”
One thing Ms Osiecki wanted the public to know was that the surfers did not move towards the whale, they were at the break and the whale moved towards them.
“There were 30 or so surfers in the water and the whale came close to them so they all stayed still and waited for the whale to move away.
“The surfers weren’t doing anything wrong but I bet it was an amazing experience for them,” she said.
“It was a pretty amazing experience for me and I wasn’t even in the water!”
