Netball Australia confirmed her place in the 12-strong team when announcing its 2017/18 Australian Netball Diamonds squad on Monday, made up of 18 athletes from across the country – including Pettitt’s NSW compatriots April Brandley, Paige Hadley, Kim Ravaillion and Gabi Simpson.
It’s the second time this year Pettitt will represent Australia, after adding to her international caps earlier this year during the Netball Quad Series held in England and South Africa prior to Suncorp Super Netball starting.
“It’s very exciting to be named to represent my country again,” Pettitt said on learning of her inclusion.
“The last few years (being left out of the team) has been really tough, but being back in the green and gold earlier this year in the Netball Quad Series gave me a lot of inspiration – I knew there was more I could give to the Diamonds.
“I’m really looking forward at the chance to do so, and against quality opposition in the Silver Ferns. Hopefully we’ll see a big NSW home crowd for the final game at Qudos Bank Arena.”
The squad was selected by Diamonds head coach Lisa Alexander and National Selectors Anne Sargeant OAM and Michelle Wilkins, with Alexander confirming selection was based on performances during Suncorp Super Netball, in addition to performance and combinations in previous international test matches.
“We have witnessed exceptional performances in Suncorp Super Netball and on the international stage, with a number of athletes demonstrating career-best form,” Alexander said.
“Athletes have shown great skill, drive and resilience, impressing the National Selectors and I. All selections are difficult, but given the wealth of talent on display, this has been one of the most challenging.”
“Our squad boasts versatile and flexible athletes. With the Suncorp Super Netball season commencing after the Commonwealth Games, now is the time for our athletes to get down to business in preparation for the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games 2018,” Alexander said.
“All eyes are on our goal of winning the gold medal in front of a home crowd, and the Netball Quad Series and Constellation Cup are critical milestones leading into the pinnacle event.”
