Each year, David Miller, head of the Ensemble Studies Unit at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music and tour accompanist, brings a group of outstanding young musicians on an eight day tour of the South Coast. Their concert is always a highlight of the concert season presented by the Sapphire Coast Music Society.

On Friday, June 30 David is bringing the Coil Quartet with Chung Him Chu (soprano saxophone) Xiao Han (alto saxophone) Jasmine-Jade Mills (tenor saxophone) and Travers Keirle (baritone saxophone) to Wolumla Hall. The tour will include Jane Anderson (soprano) and James McDonald (guitar) and will be accompanied by David Miller (piano).
The program will include pieces for voice, voice and guitar, solo saxophone and saxophone quartet. The repertoire list includes works by Franz Schubert, Reynaldo Hahn, folk song arrangements and operatic arias.
There is also the promise of Handel’s fabulous Arrival of the Queen of Sheba by the saxophone quartet, a Pirates of the Caribbean medley and solos for both guitar and saxophone.
David is is widely recognised as one of Australia’s leading pianists, chamber musicians and vocal accompanists. He has been appointed as a member of the Order of Australia for his service to music. His distinguished career has included partnerships with many internationally renowned singers and instrumentalists.
David has been on the staff of Sydney Conservatorium of Music since 1980 and in 1995 was appointed the first chair of the Ensemble Studies Unit, with responsibility for Chamber Music/Accompaniment tuition and administration throughout the institution.
He introduced an innovative and comprehensive program of study for students at both graduate and under-graduate levels and actively promoted a wide variety of performance opportunities for student ensembles in concerts, broadcasts and tours. He has also conducted master classes and lectures for universities, conservatoriums, music organisations and music conferences in many parts of Australia and Asia.
David Miller’s studio has produced many of Australia’s finest young piano accompanists. He has been instrumental in setting up the Geoffrey Parsons Australian Scholarship and other awards to assist all young accompanists and repetiteurs.
The tour by David Miller and students from the ‘Con’ are a highlight of the concert season and take place at Wolumla Hall, Wolumla on Friday, June 30 at 6.30pm. Tickets are available at Brief Affairs Merimbula, Magpie Music Bega and Eden Music Centre, Eden, cost is $25 with under 16s free.
