Students were invited to apply for the program and undertake a selection process with the ADP aimed at “value-adding” education by supporting these student-athletes in their sporting commitments and goals.
The college commended the 24 students who were selected from 12 separate disciplines who were selected for the debut program.
A spokesperson for the school said students ranged from Years 6-10 and would now undergo personalised training programs based on strength and conditioning, technical skill and personal development and sports medicine support.
Throughout Term 1 students engaged in an intense seven-week cardio program to develop a solid aerobic foundation for their sport.
The students will continue cardio work in Term 2, but also build on strength and conditioning with specifically designed programs to suit their chosen sport.
The college is hoping to work with local development officers and professionals in building these areas and providing valuable knowledge, direction, experience and skill development for these athletes.
The school congratulated the students, who had already been hitting big milestones.
Tom Kellar was the leading batsman in the local cricket competition for the premiership winning Merimbula Knights.
Amy Wels also played for the Knights, but was also named in the “Possibles v’s Probables” at State for hockey.
Zac Keogh was in the local premiership Merimbula Knights cricket team. He came 3rd at Nationals for NSW and was the highest run scorer at State. Zac will be heading to England later on in the year to develop his skills through some games and academy training.
Charlotte Miller, who is a State swimmer and was selected in the NSW Target Squad. Charlotte was also awarded runner-up Club Age Champion.
Finally, a huge congratulations goes to Kiarna Woolley-Blain. Not only did Kiarna receive a Bronze in Javelin at the recent Nationals Competition, but she has also been selected to represent Australia in Canada later this year in Javelin, Discus and Shotput. Kiarna will be holding a fundraiser at Merimbula Subway on Saturday, 27 May 2017, where proceeds from all subs sold will help Kiarna towards her trip. It would be great to see the local community there to support her.
