In the first game against Bermagui, Narooma started slowly with Bermagui taking an early lead. But by halftime, the Lions had settled to level the scores.
The Lions put the foot down in the second half to run out comfortable winners. Butters, Nugget, Brad and Liam were the best on ground. Final scores: 11-7-73 to 4-4-28.
Game 2 saw the Lions take on the Merimbula Diggers. This game was a one sided affair with Narooma winning by a good margin. Best were Rowan, Liam, Butters and Nick Carter. Final scores:12-3-75 to 5-2-32.
In Game 3, the Narooma Lions took on the Eden Whalers. With a place in the final at stake, Narooma had to put in a big performance. With their greater fitness and ball use, Narooma had a big win. Best were Jeremy, Red Dog, Brad, Nugget and Butters again kicked a bag. Final scores: 17-6-108 to 3-3-21.
The grand final was played between Narooma and last year’s premiers Tathra. This was the match of the day with both teams having a real crack.
The Lions led by two goals at half time and managed to keep that lead to the end of the game, running out premiers, 8-3-51 to 6-1-37.
All players contributed to the win, with Jeremy a stand out. The Lions played great team footy all day, with coach Mick Clothier pleased the way the boys ran out games. He said the players could see the benefit of the hard work they put in on the track.
The Lion’s women’s team also played on the day losing their first two games by a very small margin then winning their last game against Merimbula Diggers.
With a lot of new girls and first time players they all performed brilliantly, and once they settled into their positions they really hit their straps.
With a bit more game time and the return of some key players, they should have a great year.
Don’t forget training at Bill Smyth Oval at 5pm Tuesdays and Thursdays for women and all junior sides. The seniors train on Mondays and Thursdays from 5pm.
With several players unavailable on the weekend, holding a spot in the side will become hotly contested, so for those players only ever training now and then, maybe they might make a bit more of an effort to get to training, and there is only three weeks to the first game.
As for the club on a whole it was a great day. Well done to all the players’ men and women and all the support staff who helped out. Go Lions!
First game starts Saturday, April 22 with all sides scheduled to play
