Disability Council NSW team leader of the accessible housing working group, Unis Goh said that accessible housing was one of their priorities and they are recommending that all new properties should be built to a universal accessible standard.
“It’s not just about those with disability but also for mums and dads with prams and strollers and older people too. If you make a building accessible at the beginning it is a lot more economical than converting it at a later stage,” Ms Goh said
The visit to Merimbula was a chance to see two accessible homes in a regional area and also a chance to talk with Bega Valley Shire Council.
The group visited units in Pambula which Ms Goh said were “totally accessible for residents” and then went on to the Red House at Tura Beach where the group toured the home and saw the independent and shared living facilities.
“It’s part of our remit to talk with everyone and to give advice directly to the Minister from people with disability.
“We came here on the recommendation of Paul [Zeller],” Ms Goh said.
Disability Council NSW is the official advisory body to the NSW government and its purpose is to provide the Minister for Disability Services and NSW government with independent advice on matters that affect people with disability in NSW.
