Having celebrated their 25th Anniversary in 2016, Co-Opera is excited to be still on the road and this time sharing their sumptuous new production of Eugene Onegin by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky.

The work is woven with Tchaikovsky’s expressive genius as the heartbreaking story unfolds of missed opportunity and unrequited love. Tchaikovsky described Eugene Onegin as “The best thing I ever wrote” which is remarkable given his many timeless masterpieces including Swan Lake and The Nutcracker.

The production, sung largely in English but with select pieces in the original Russian, is set to be somewhat of a pinnacle piece for the company and the perfect platform for their ongoing commitment to emerging artists and to taking big city culture to the bush.

This very special production draws us into the world of Eugene Onegin, a man with movie star good looks, money, and the world at his feet, but where none of these privileges can save him from himself.

Eugene Onegin will feature opulent costumes based on 19th Century Russian fashion trends inhabiting a specially designed elliptical stage swathed in Russian folk-inspired textiles.

Emerging artist, mezzo-soprano Bronwyn Douglass, will be making her debut with the company in the role of Olga, Tatyana’s much loved sister. 

“I am so grateful for the opportunity to perform in Eugene Onegin as Olga. She is a beautiful young character who is full of life - not common for mezzo-sopranos who are used to performing as young boys or old witches,” Ms Douglass said. 

Also debuting in his role, Branko Lovrinov will sing the role of Lensky the poet and Eugene Onegin’s best friend. Branko holds a Bachelor of Music (Honours) in voice and a Master of Philosophy in Music which focused on Russian and Croatian operatic repertoire. He says singing the role of Lensky brings together his understanding of Russian with the opportunity to develop a professional understanding of the role.

Audiences will be swept away by the craft of these highly talented artists bringing to life the glorious music, the rich costumes, sets and dances, and the compelling and very human story of Eugene Onegin.

Co-Opera is coming to Wolumla Hall on Wednesday, March 22 at 6.30pm. Tickets are $60 (no concessions) and are available at Brief Affairs Boutique (Merimbula), Magpie Music (Bega), Eden Music Centre and at the door. Pre-booking preferred.
