Merimbula Tourism manager Nat Kirby said she organised the ‘Seniors on SUPs’ event because she wanted to do something that would challenge the stereotype of Seniors and engage the broader community.
“Most of our volunteers at the Visitor Information Centre are in an age bracket considered ‘Seniors’ but I’ve never liked the term ‘Seniors’ nor the attached patronisation that comes with the term,” Ms Kirby said.
“The people I know in that age bracket are vibrant, lively people in our community and I wanted to do something for them that is fun and perhaps considered a little risky!”
Mitchies SUP and Kayak, Coastlife Adventures and Merimbula Stand Up Paddle Lessons and Tours have jumped on board and will providing free lessons and boards for people to try out.
Steve Farley of Merimbula Stand Up Paddle Lessons and Tours said the beauty of SUPs is that there is no age limit.
“It’s great exercise for people of all ages, just last week I had a woman who had had a stroke and she really got into it,” Mr Farley said.
The event will kick off on Saturday, March 4 at 9am at Spencer Park and will include a free barbecue breakfast for anyone over 60 thanks to the Rotary Club of Pambula.
Bookings are essential on 6495 1129 or call into the Visitor Information Centre between 9-5 Mon to Fri this week.
