In 1971 Tim and Peter were among the musicians who recorded the soundtrack to Morning of the Earth, the first Australian film soundtrack to go gold.
The film captured the spirit of Australia's surfing community that had developed through the 1960s.
The film portrays surfers living in spiritual harmony with nature, making their own boards (and homes) as they travelled in search of the perfect wave across Australia’s north-east coast, Bali and Hawaii.
The movie is regarded as one of the finest of its genre and noted as recording the first surfers to ride the waves at Uluwatu on the very southern tip of Bali and so bringing Bali to the attention of surfers around the world.
Peter Howe's "I'm Alive" is the track most often associated with the movie and is one that to this day Tim Gaze is always impressed when performed live.
“It’s still one of my favourite tracks that Pete does,” Mr Gaze said.
“I love the lyrics, there’s this part where he says he ‘spends a lot of time inside the world or delightful rain’. It really paints a picture and is a nod to being in the wave.”
Despite working together back in the 70s it wasn’t until around 30 years later that Peter and Tim reunited and started making music together.
Around 2003 Tim – who had spent years playing in various bands – sought out Peter wanting to reconnect.
The timing was perfect as Peter was retiring for his job teaching in the Bega Valley and was about to embark on a sailing trip along the east coast.
During his trip, inspiration struck Peter and he and Tim were able to create their first major project, Pictures of the Coast. This was followed by their most recent album Secret Spot which they released around four years ago.
The new album Secret Spot was written entirely for surfers, according to Pete, and is “filled with the pulse of the ocean and the spirit of surfing”.
Tim and Peter’s atmospheric acoustic music resonates strongly with surfers but the evocative sounds are sure to impress people of all ages and backgrounds.
When performing their songs they interact and connect with the audience.
“A lot of the songs reflect our first hand experiences and we like to share this with the audience,” Tim said.
Tim Gaze and Peter Howe are performing at Club Sapphire on Friday, February 3. This is a free concert and will be in the Rockpool Cafe from 8.30pm.
