Jon Gaul was speaking to the two big news items of Thursday morning, when news of NSW Premier Mike Baird’s resignation came hot on the heels of Bega Cheese’s purchase of Vegemite.
Mr Gaul said Mr Baird’s resignation was “not entirely a surprise” and the question now was more of who would replace him.
“I had heard rumblings after the Orange byelection, but I didn’t take much notice of them at the time,” he said.
“We’re loyal to our local bloke [Bega MP and NSW Transport and Infrastructure Minister Andrew Constance]. He’s down here all the time even though he is a senior cabinet minister in parliament 200 days of the year.
“At a time of Trumpism, One Nation, Shooters and Fishers – the rising forces on the right – would it be a better time to have a Premier from the left like Gladys [NSW Treasurer Gladys Berijiklian], or from the centre right like Andrew?” Mr Gaul pondered.
“My slogan is Andrew Constance puts a rose in every cheek!”
Mr Gaul said he was also keen to see a Premier from regional NSW instead of continuing the country-city divide.
“Education, health, infrastructure – there is a wide city-country gap. One way to address this is Constance.”
