When musical director Shaun Wykes formed Dreamcoat Productions specifically for Joseph – which was extremely popular and has since received five Canberra Area Theatre Award nominations and a commendation – he decided it was important for all of the profits to go back to the Sapphire Coast community.
“As we were bringing the community together for the production, we thought it would be great to donate the profits back into the community,” Mr Wykes said.
On Sunday, January 15, with all the cast and crew together, Dreamcoat Productions donated $13,018 to the Social Justice Advocates of the Sapphire Coast.
“The ethos and aim of the Advocates, who support the most needy in our community, really resonated with us and we thought they were the perfect group. We know they will do truly worthwhile work with the funds and are so pleased we can donate this money to them,” Mr Wykes said.
While Dreamcoat Productions was originally formed as a one-off, Mr Wykes said the response from those involved and the audiences made him excited at the prospect of the group doing another show and continuing to donate the profits back into the community.
“We received such great support from local businesses and sponsors and if we could maintain and build on that support then I think it would very likely happen again,” he said.
“It was such an honour to work with the amazing cast and crew to stage this dearly loved musical. The communities response and warmth was incredible and something I will really treasure.”
Sapphire Coast Advocates Mick Brosnan and John Liston – who was also a main character in the musical – accepted the cheque and expressed their sincere thanks to all involved.
