Construction has officially started on the $5.4 million upgrade to Merimbula Regional Airport which will allow for more frequent aircraft and larger planes to land in Merimbula.

At the sod turning ceremony on Monday morning Member for Bega and NSW Minister for Transport Andrew Constance said it was important to see the Merimbula airport flourish.
“What we’re seeing in terms of regional air services across the board is enormous growth and a changing sector and with that changing sector comes changing opportunities for our community,” he said.
The airport upgrades will be delivered in two stages. Stage one construction will involve upgrading the airport’s water main to ensure sufficient water supply for an expanded airport in the event of a fire and stage two will involve the lengthening and upgrade of the runway.
Council general manager Leanne Barnes said local company RD Miller has been contracted for the stage one works to be completed in April, followed by stage two to be finished by mid-2018.
