Lucky our council has leapt into action to prevent this happening here.

A nice big pumpout from the sewerage plant has generated so much algae sludge in the ocean zone from Pambula Beach to the Rivermouth that no one can actually sink.

This zone is now the South Coast’s answer to the Dead Sea and we all know what a tourist winner that area is.

You just would not know how many lives council is going to save.

We would be interested to hear if someone saw damage being done to a blue i30 station wagon in the car park at back of Just Jeans on Friday, January 13.

A 'P' plate car was parked next door and it looks like a car door was thrown open which damaged the back passenger side door.

While my daughter was visiting over the past 10 days someone has also backed into the front of the car hitting the number plate.

Hopefully the perpetrators will own up or experience karma for their devious behaviour of damaging a vehicle and running away.

Just a safety comment on Bar Beach Merimbula – you mention the rip there is caused by the surf. It is not! 

The rip is actually a tidal current as the lake changes from full tide and begins to empty for low tide.

Bar Beach looks benign when there is no surf, as in your picture, but the current is still there on the outgoing tide. The higher the tide has been, the stronger the current. Surf conditions can make it more obvious and also more dangerous.

Similar tidal conditions also are evident at any of the lagoons along the coast if they are open and of course Pambula Rivermouth.

The rips you describe are a feature of any other beach and as Simon says both a benefit and a danger.

Bar Beach is such a pretty spot but has huge risks for the unwary. 

It was the wonderfully wise and funny comedian Groucho Marx who said: “Those are my principles, and if you don't like them... well, I have others.”

Given his apparent ability to uphold that tradition, there can be little doubt that former journalist and newly-elected Councillor Mitchell Nadin will make a fine Australian politician.

In his letter to the editor published just three weeks ago, Cr Nadin argued vigorously that the issue of bullying in schools “is not within the local government purview” while this week he has reportedly been involved in the drafting of a motion to be put to council which achieves exactly the opposite outcome.

It would seem that those who aspire to a successful career in politics in the post-modern world of “new truth” must be capable of appearing to be all things to all people.

The NSW Department of Education must now realise that scrapping the School Certificate was an action with far-reaching and negative consequences. 

Secondary students were comprehensively tested on the first four years of English and maths in their secondary education and the results were positive. 

Students respected it, teachers respected it and employers respected it because it was an assessment with integrity. 

That half of Year 9 would fail Minister Piccoli’s new HSC requirements should initiate further debate on the wisdom of that move. Bring back the School Certificate.
