The mechanism for skill development was via a three day camp, based around the shared experiences of aquatic and adventure activities such as surfing, kayaking and beach carnival activities at Pambula Beach.
The Lead and Include Adventure Camp was open to young people aged between 16 - 25, with a mix of one third people with/two thirds without a disability, with 13 participants in total, who thoroughly enjoyed their weekend.
One of the participants, Ada Baker positively summed up her experience.
“I made new friends and learned to surf, kayak and paddle board,” she said. “It was very interesting to learn all about life saving and beach rescue. I feel much safer and informed on what to do in an emergency now. I really enjoyed the beautiful food and the accommodation was very comfortable.”
The camp provided participants the opportunity to connect with peers with and without a disability, learn about their role in creating an inclusive community, learn about themselves as young leaders and develop new skills and confidence in aquatic environments.
