The chamber choir, which was founded and directed by Sandy Glass, is sure to impress at its upcoming concert. Due to limited seating in the venue, the choir will offer two performances of this program.
The program, titled “Winter in Summer”, will feature choral works by composers from cold winter climates, including the beautiful “Ubi caritas” by Norwegian composer, Ola Gjeilo, and a set of playful harvest songs by Estonian composer, Veljo Tormis.
Henry Purcell’s moving Funeral Music for Queen Mary, featuring brass quartet and timpani, will be performed to commemorate the early death of Queen Mary II in the harsh December winter of 1694. The second half of the program offers both lively and contemplative Christmas music by English and American composers.
Luca Ziino, the choir’s celebrated, young pianist, will accompany the choir and features as soloist on works by Chopin and others.
A pre-concert discussion with Dr. Glass will take place 45 minutes prior to each concert. The audience is invited to early to learn about the music to be performed. Following the Saturday concert, light refreshments will be available at a reception in the Church Hall.
Spirit Allegro will be performing Winter in Summer on Friday, December 9 at 7pm and Saturday, December 10 at 2pm at the Christ Church in Pambula. Cost is $15 at the door, children under 12 are free.
