Based in Sydney, the Jugalug Stringband plays a repertoire of music based on the styles of the string bands of the early 20th century - comprising jazz, jugband, blues, pre-western swing and ragtime.
The music is fun and exciting and many of the predominantly resonator instruments are unique, dating back to the early part of the twentieth century.
The band was formed in December 2005 for a quick gig in an eastern suburbs restaurant but when everyone got into the music and the cooks abandoned the kitchen to join in, it was decided there was more life to the band and they would stick together; hence The Jugalug Stringband was born!
Since then Jugalug has performed regularly for the Sydney Jazz Club and at many jazz festivals on the East Coast. They have released three successful albums, Waltz Mysterioso, Six Pack and Wabash Blues.
The Jugalug Stringband plays a repertoire of pre-western swing music based upon the styles of early string and jug bands of the 1920s and 30s.
The band is entertaining, engaging and swings like crazy and the instruments, dating back to the early part of the 20th century, include National guitars, uke and lap steel, banjo, strohviol, mandolin washboard and double bass. The members are all veterans of the acoustic music scene.
The band includes Phil Donnison who plays Beeton ukulele, National guitar, Beeton and Rickenbacher lap steel guitars, kazoo, nose flute and handles the vocal. He plays with numerous other bands and both Phil and Stewart also performed with Tiny Tim. Stewart Binsted plays tenor banjo, National guitar, ukulele and jug, Marcus Holden plays violin, strohviol, mandolin and Beeton resophonic tenor guitar, Adam Barnard plays washboard, traps, and Stan Valacos plucks, strums, slaps and bows the double bass. He performs regularly with George Washingmachine, Ian Date, Bob Barnard and Geoff Bull.
This will be a real fun night, bringing back the fun and excitement of traditional stringband jazz of the tween-war years.
Cost is $15 for jazz club members and $20 for visitors with music commencing at 7.30pm.
Bookings can be made with Aileen/Kevin Walsh (6495 9853) or will be available on the night at the door. The Club Sapphire bistro opens at 6pm with its extensive menu; meals can either be eaten in the bistro, or ordered, collected and eaten at leisure while listening to the music.
