There are 18 hall committees and 10 sportsground committees operating in the shire and with up to 12 community representatives potentially taking up a position at each site, Bega Valley Shire Council is strongly encouraging existing committee members and other interested people to nominate.
As all who use these facilities will attest, the wonderful contribution that volunteers make to the broader community cannot be underestimated and council staff are looking forward to working closely with the respective committees in the future.
Council’s halls and cemeteries officer, Karen Terwin, said the shire’s halls were invaluable community assets, hosting events ranging from elections, dances, fund raisers, dance and exercise classes, to markets and school events.
“Hall committees assist in all aspects of management by meeting frequently to discuss facility issues including taking bookings and associated fees, conducting working bees, overseeing routine maintenance and regularly liaising with council officers to have input to developing facility management plans and projects at the halls,” Ms Terwin said.
Council’s leisure and recreation co-ordinator, Justin Welsford, said there were exciting times ahead in regards to the shire’s sporting facilities, with the recent adoption of master plans for the Bega and Pambula Sporting Complexes, the development of Facility Management Plans for each site, and significant oval renovation work on the horizon.
“We have been fortunate to have such committed volunteers involved with our sportsgrounds.
“However a number of our stalwarts are looking to take a step back so new blood and fresh eyes are needed to drive things into the future,” Mr Welsford said.
Nominations for the committees close on September 9, with the forms available from council's website www.begavalley.nsw.gov.au or from council’s main office in Bega.
