It also marked the end of a long-running chapter in a proposed supermarket development for Pambula.

The application by developer Rodney Thompson to build a supermarket on the corner of Merimbola and Bullara Streets has been before the council several times, each time each time deferred for additional reports.

However, on Wednesday, it was passed by a 5-2 majority, with both Myor Michael Britten and Cr Kristy McBain leaving chambers due to pecuniary interests.

The concerns still voiced by councillors revolved around potential flooding of adjacent residential land and homes, as well as a lack of physical connection to the main street and perceived “theme” of the town.

The connectivity issue was annulled somewhat by the addition of a draft condition of consent clause to the effect the developer be required to provide a concrete footpath linking the western side of Merimbola St through to the bus stop on Whitby Lane.

It is unknown at this stage whether that new condition will be agreed to by the developer.

As to the flooding concerns, BVSC director of transport and infrastructure Terry Dodds responded by saying in the event of a 1-in-20-year flood, the nearby properties would be inundated anyway – and that they are noted as flood-prone areas – so a potential rise of up to 30mm wouldn’t make much difference.

Cr Keith Hughes countered by arguing that may be the case for a 1-in-20-year event, but for other smaller flood events, 30mm could mean the difference between remaining above the water line or a wet carpet.

Earlier, the meeting heard from Pambula liquor store owner Glen Baker, who is likely to shift his business to the new premises once built.

He said if there were significant concerns remaining in the community and other business operators, they would be at the council meetings arguing their case – which on Wednesday they weren’t.

“There’s not one issue raised on this DA that has not been satisfactorily addressed,” Mr Baker said.
